The best types of clay to use when trying to make a smooth finish (no glaze)
“Burnishing”
This technique involves using clay mixed with sand or various other clay types, which then undergoes a surface finishing process for pottery to achieve a smooth, glossy, and semi-waterproof texture without applying any glaze. This ancient technique relies on manual pressure to compress and align the clay particles closely together until the surface reflects light. It carries a rich history and practical steps passed down for thousands of years.

“The Best Clay Types for Creating a Smooth Surface (Without Glaze)”

  1. Porcelain: The smoothest and purest white clay available. It features an exceptionally fine texture with absolutely no sand or grog mixed in. Once fired, it yields a highly refined, smooth surface with a delicate translucency.
  2. Fine-grained Stoneware: Easy to throw and highly durable. Opting for a smooth or fine body formula provides an incredibly sleek and strong finish. It is ideal for those seeking a smooth texture but with better workability than porcelain.
  3. Ball Clay: Frequently used as an additive to enhance plasticity and smoothness in various clay bodies, such as compound clays.
